Socializing in Poland

Christine and Klaus Hesse have visited the Poland’s oldest Academy of Art in Krakow on 27th and 28th of October. Initial reason for this visit was to ameliorate the relationship with the Polish design scene and to check possibilities for eventual cooperation. The Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow is one of the most important Academy of Art and Design and talent scout source in Eastern Europe. Meanwhile Krakow became a popular place to study for German art and design students too. Therefore lots of German students have been present. No reason to wonder because Krakow has been elected twice Europe’s cultural capital. 55 buildings of Krakow’s city have become world heritage. One more reason for Christine Hesse has been the search of a Polish counterpart who represents the European section of DMI Design Management Institute Boston. At the faculty of visual communication Christine and Klaus Hesse have met the former dean Prof. Ryszard Otreba. The sculptor and graphic designer has a worldwide reputation and has been a former Icograda-activist. Together with his students he was following both interesting lectures of Christine Hesse about »what is essential for good design.« Furthermore there has been a very intense conversation with the Poster Designer Prof. Wladyslaw Pluta and the Editorial Designer Prof. Jacek Mrowczyk about the Polish design scene. Jacek Mrowczyk is also editor of the only design magazine (2d+3d) in Poland. At the end of their visit Klaus Hesse was holding a lecture towards all students and members of the Academy titled »In between. The best place to create a new culture.«

Interstate comparison

The »Wirtschaftswoche«, issue 32/2003, availed the actual coats of arms which have recently been redesigned by Hesse Design for its cover theme »Federal States in comparison«. Hesse developed these coats of arms in 2000 within the context of the Plenar hall’s recreation. Hesse has won the call for creative tenders, unfortunately the draft was not put into practice. Nevertheless the redesigned heraldry is a great point of popularity. Next to the »Wirtschaftswoche« also the news magazine »Der Spiegel« has used the mentioned coats of arms.

The lecture of Christine Hesse was titled »what makes design successful?« and she was talking to mostly 100 auditors about the essential questions upon design strategy and design management. » A brand means a certain attitude towards life. It needs to be authentic and credible, to define, to motivate and to enhance the employees’ identification with their company or products. Brands are the real shareholder value. A brand is made for overcoming of fears. It is not the rational fundament that is giving success but the right credo at the right time«.

RWE-Annual Report with international look

The number 3 among the international energy companies is persecuting an evident aim: integration and consolidation. After a period of external growth RWE now needs to integrate the purchased companies in an efficient and value increasing way into the corporate group. Consequently the RWE-Annual Report is following the motto: “integration – the key to success”. International teamwork, useful contacts, efficient processes. In cooperation with the RWE-corporate communication Hesse developed the photographic concept for 14 Annual Reports of the corporate group – for RWE AG (including the Annual Statement of Accounts for the holding) as well as for 12 affiliated companies. Of the key business segments electricity, gas, water and environmental services they have chosen at each case a couple of colleagues, which cooperated successfully cross-country and cross-business segments. The pictures have been taken at the worldwide aimed markets of the company. After five month work the Annual Reports of the RWE corporate group are finished since 17th of March 2003 with common layout, common photographic concept and with common purpose: to communicate the positioning of RWE worldwide with success. Together with eight European agencies Hesse Design developed an alliance of Annual Reports that are talking the same language as to structure, layout and photographic style.
