In the German-speaking countries work more than 1,4000 companies obtaining worldwide places one to three in their industry although their annual turnover is less than 3 billion €. Most of them are relatively unknown. Hesse Design interrogated 150 German medium-sized companies. The survey shows that many of them are not interested in classical advertisement but spend 18 percent of their marketing budgets for corporate appearance. Why? They intend to strengthen and strategically develop their brands with the help of design; they use »vitamin D«. In the human body the vitamin is good for strong teeth and bones, also for mental flexibility, good nerves and better body’s defense. For companies the “vitamin D” works similar. This issue of “design by doing” documents the results of the survey and shows in three case studies what an enterprise is able to achive with a »vitamin cure«: The steel producer Zapp obtained not only a new corporate design but also more powerful organization structures. Heinze, manufacturer of light and interior accessories, strengthened not only the merchandises but also the profile of its private brand.
